Nozzle clogging solved: high-resolution inkjet printer with internal circulation.

Two in the morning in a filling hall, the line is down, and the operator holds up a PET bottle with half the date code missing. Nine times out of ten that is not a machine failure. That is a nozzle that sat idle through a changeover, dried out, and started dropping dots. NaxJet sees this call every week, and it is almost always preventable.

Why a nozzle clogs the moment the line stops

CIJ and PIJ heads do not clog because the ink is bad. They clog because the ink stopped moving. A standard printhead has a dead-end path at the nozzle plate, and when the machine idles, solvent evaporates at the orifice. Viscosity climbs, the pressure valve drifts, and the next start-up fires crooked or not at all.

  • Solvent viscosity drift — a warm afternoon or a cold night shift changes it, and the drop formation goes with it.
  • Pigment settling — white UV ink, ceramic ink and varnish settle in the channels within hours, not days.
  • Air bubbles in the ink circuit — a loose cartridge or a poor prime pushes a bubble to the nozzle plate; you get a missing line of dots.
  • Skipped shutdown cleaning — the single biggest cause. Operators pull the plug, the nozzle dries, and the morning shift inherits a fault code.
  • Cheap consumable alternatives — cut-rate solvent with the wrong flash point attacks the seals and clogs the recovery line.

What internal circulation actually does

On the NaxJet N series PIJ UV platform, the ink does not sit still. The patented internal circulation path runs directly through every nozzle channel — not around the head, through it. Ink keeps moving while the machine is idle, so bubbles and debris get carried out instead of parking at the orifice.

The practical result on a real line: up to one month on standby, then it fires on the first shot. No purge ritual, no solvent flush at 6 a.m., no scrapped bottles. The head also self-heals small blockages, which matters when you are running UV white — the worst settling ink in the plant.

The drop physics matter too. Drop velocity runs above 10 m/s, and jet angle error stays within ≤1.3 mrad — that is a drop leaving the head and landing inside a 10 cm circle fifty metres away. Combine that with the single-row 300 dpi stitching process and you lose the banding and ghosting that makes a scanner reject a code.

Internal circulation vs. a standard head — what changes on the floor

Five things I check before I leave a plant

  1. Shutdown procedure is posted at the HMI — not in a folder in the office. If the night shift cannot read it, it does not exist.
  2. Solvent viscosity and ink level — logged daily. A closed-loop viscometer reading is not a decoration.
  3. Nozzle cleaning routine — cap on, head parked, and the cleaning pump actually cycling. Never skip it to save two minutes.
  4. Print distance — 1–20 mm on the N series. Push the head back to 30 mm and the drop placement wander shows up as blur.
  5. Negative pressure at 0.01 precision — a small drift is enough to make an intermittent code that passes one shift and fails the next.

One more thing worth saying plainly: printhead integration into an existing line is where most projects go wrong, not the printer itself. Get the encoder signal and the photo-eye trigger clean before you tune anything else.

Shop floor FAQ: three questions a week

Can I leave the printer idle over the weekend?

With internal circulation, yes — up to a month of standby. On a standard CIJ head, no. Flush it Friday or spend Monday morning cleaning it.

Does circulation replace regular maintenance?

No. It buys you time and kills the drying problem. You still change filters, check seals and log viscosity. It is insurance, not a substitute for the checklist.

Will it print on my material?

UV ink on glass, PVC, coated cartons, aluminium foil and plastics — usually yes, but adhesion depends on the surface. Send us the sample and we will test it and report back before you buy anything.

Got a nozzle that keeps dropping out? Send a sample of your material for a free test mark and a written coding report, or send us a short video of the fault and we will diagnose it remotely the same day.
